Resilience is a word that we are hearing more frequently in everyday conversation. It is the ability to “bounce back” from adversity. People with high resilience are like a rubber band that snaps back to its original size and shape after being pulled and stretched. The good news is that all of us have some level of resilience and resilience skills can be learned.

Stretch, Don’t Snap:  Resilience Skills for Busy Professionals


Join us for a day of learning about resilience on Thursday, June 15, 2017.  This will be an opportunity to take a respite from focusing on others and invest in your own professional and personal development.  During the day we will have the opportunity to learn about the science of resilience and explore and apply various resilient practices that can help you thrive in the face of pressure and demands.  The session will be interactive, engaging and practical.

Our session will be co-facilitated by two practitioners who have experience working with people and organizations working in high stress and high risk roles.  They also are human beings with their own varying levels of resilience at any given point in time and see themselves as fellow travelers on the road to resilience.

Lynne Cripe is a social psychologist with 20 years’ experience working with organizations and individuals to foster resilience in the face of challenges and crises.  She currently serves as the Director of Resilience Services at The KonTerra Group.

Known for her collaboration and facilitation skills, Lynne has demonstrated ability to develop high performing teams and facilitate cultural change in complex organizations. Drawing on her experience in human resources, programming and international experience, Lynne is able to identify practical and technically sound interventions that promote the resilience of staff and improve team and leader effectiveness.

She has also consulted, facilitated and offered training related to stress, resilience and organizational development for a variety of non-profit, private sector and government enterprises.  She was a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines and has worked in more than 25 countries, primarily in high-risk environments.

Tim Calvey is a licensed psychologist with extensive experience working with adults managing stress and promoting resilience, trauma recovery, grief and loss, and phase of life transitions.

Tim currently serves as the Project Director for the USAID Staff Care Service Center, which is managed by The KonTerra Group.  During his tenure with this project, Tim was part of a clinical team sent to provide comprehensive staff care support to the US Embassy community in Nairobi, Kenya after the Westgate Mall Attack in September 2013. He regularly conducts trainings on stress and resilience at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, VA, as well as for USAID staff preparing for deployment to high risk and high stress locations around the world.

Tim brings a wealth of experience and professional training having worked in medical and palliative care settings, social service agencies, and educational organizations in the United States, India, Mexico, and Eastern Europe. He also served on a CDC sponsored research team investigating the efficacy of an HIV prevention behavioral intervention to reduce sexual risk for HIV infection. Tim previously served as the Assistant Director for Outreach & Consultation at American University Counseling Center.  Tim has provided individual and group clinical services, psycho-educational workshops, paraprofessional trainings, crisis response planning and interventions, and programmatic consultation on mental health concerns affecting the campus community.
